A high-profile scandal has erupted in Bangladesh involving a former national beauty queen and a former Saudi ambassador, as police formally charged the woman with extortion in what authorities are calling an elaborate honey-trap scheme aimed at coercing millions from the diplomat.
The Accused: Meghna Alam
The accused, Meghna Alam, 30, rose to prominence after being crowned Miss Earth Bangladesh, a title that propelled her into the world of modeling and public appearances. Over the years, she gained a modest social media following and was occasionally seen at diplomatic and elite social events in Dhaka.
But Alam’s fame took a dark turn earlier this month when she was arrested under the country’s Special Powers Act, a contentious piece of legislation criticized by rights groups for allowing indefinite detention without trial. Police initially accused her of actions that could “disrupt state security” and “prejudice the country’s financial interests.”
Alleged Blackmail Attempt
According to police sources, Alam and unnamed associates attempted to blackmail the former Saudi ambassador by engaging in a romantic entanglement and secretly recording private interactions. The goal, investigators allege, was to extort $5 million from the envoy by threatening to leak compromising content.
Speaking to AFP, police spokesperson Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed that Alam is now being formally charged with extortion. “The investigation has found sufficient grounds to file criminal charges,” Rahman stated.
A senior law enforcement official, who requested anonymity due to the diplomatic sensitivities involved, told AFP that the plot had been orchestrated with precision. “This was not a random act. It was a planned attempt to exploit a high-ranking foreign official. Given Bangladesh’s reliance on Saudi Arabia for labor and financial cooperation, the stakes are incredibly high,” the officer said.
Diplomatic Sensitivity and Strategic Ties
The case has raised serious concerns within diplomatic circles, as Saudi Arabia is one of Bangladesh’s closest strategic and economic partners. The Gulf nation hosts over two million Bangladeshi migrant workers—making them the largest group of foreign laborers in the kingdom—and sends billions of dollars in remittances annually.
Moreover, Riyadh has been a consistent source of aid for Bangladesh, supporting development projects, humanitarian initiatives, and relief during natural disasters. Any disruption in this relationship could have profound socio-economic implications.
Analysts note that the case is being handled with extreme caution due to its potential to strain bilateral ties. “The government is walking a tightrope,” said Dr. Kamal Uddin, an international relations expert at Dhaka University. “It wants to uphold the rule of law without offending a powerful ally.”
Alam’s Defense and Public Statement
During her court appearance on Thursday, Alam appeared without legal counsel and firmly denied the allegations. According to The Daily Star, she told the court that the diplomat had initiated contact and pursued a relationship with her over several months.
Her father, Badrul Alam, also came forward in defense of his daughter, revealing that the former ambassador had proposed marriage. “My daughter refused because he is already married and has children. She didn’t want to be a second wife or involved in any scandal,” he told AFP.
The family insists that the relationship was consensual and that Alam was being scapegoated to protect the diplomat’s reputation.
Saudi Embassy Remains Silent
Despite repeated inquiries, the Saudi embassy in Dhaka has not issued any official statement regarding the allegations. The former ambassador has not been publicly identified, and it is unclear whether he remains in Bangladesh or has since returned to Saudi Arabia.
Some observers speculate that diplomatic immunity may have shielded the diplomat from legal consequences, further complicating the case.
Human Rights Concerns
The use of the Special Powers Act in Alam’s initial detention has sparked outrage among human rights groups, both domestically and internationally. Amnesty International, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), condemned the arrest and called for due process.
“We call on the authorities to either charge Meghna with an internationally recognizable crime or release her,” the statement read. Local organizations echoed similar sentiments, arguing that the law is frequently misused to stifle dissent or settle political and personal scores.
Looking Ahead
Legal experts say the next phase of the case will likely involve presenting digital evidence, including call logs, messages, and alleged video recordings. However, many question whether such materials, if involving a foreign diplomat, will ever be made public due to the international implications.
“This case is as much about law and justice as it is about geopolitics,” said Barrister Sara Mahjabeen, a Dhaka-based legal analyst. “The outcome will depend not just on what happened, but on how much the state is willing to reveal or pursue, given the diplomatic costs involved.”
