She further explained how she had hoped to inspire young girls to follow their dreams, despite societal expectations that prioritize academics over sports.
“I started playing football to inspire young people whose parents only encourage them to focus on studies. I wanted to show that with determination and effort, any obstacle can be overcome. But today, I sit here in regret—regretting that I sacrificed my studies, my family time, my Eid celebrations for my country, and yet, no one appreciates our sacrifices.”
Sumaiya also expressed her disappointment at the lack of institutional support for female athletes in Bangladesh.
“I had to fight with my parents to play football. I believed that in times of trouble, my country would stand by me. But reality is different. No one cares about an athlete’s mental health. Considering everything we have endured, I used my English proficiency to draft a letter for my teammates. And just for that, I have been receiving continuous threats of rape and murder for the past few days. The kind of language used against me is something I could never have imagined.”
Her emotional words highlighted the psychological distress she has been suffering from.
“I don’t know how long it will take for me to overcome this mental trauma. But I truly believe that no one should have to endure such horrors just for following their dreams.”
