China has called on the United States to withdraw the unilateral tariffs imposed on its trading partners following a landmark ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States that struck down several tariff measures introduced by President Donald Trump.
In a 6–3 decision delivered on Friday, the Court ruled that Trump did not have the authority under a 1977 law to impose sweeping tariffs on multiple countries in the manner he had done. The judgment is widely seen as having significant implications for global trade policy and executive power in the United States.
Reacting strongly to the ruling, Trump announced new measures under a different legal framework, initially declaring a 10 percent global tariff on imports. A day later, he increased the rate to 15 percent. The new tariff is expected to take effect on Tuesday and could remain in place for up to 150 days, with limited exemptions for certain goods.
China’s Ministry of Commerce stated on Monday that it is conducting a comprehensive assessment of the ruling’s impact. At the same time, Beijing urged Washington to cancel what it described as unilateral tariff measures. In its statement, the ministry emphasized that no party wins in a trade war and that protectionism ultimately harms global economic stability.
China’s Foreign Ministry also expressed concern, saying it is closely monitoring potential U.S. moves to maintain higher tariffs through alternative mechanisms, including trade investigations. Beijing reiterated that it will firmly safeguard its national interests if necessary.
The developments come just weeks before Trump’s anticipated visit to China, which would mark his first trip to the country during his second term. However, U.S. trade officials have indicated that the upcoming engagement is not solely focused on resolving trade disputes.
The Supreme Court’s decision is viewed as a major setback for Trump’s economic agenda. After returning to office, he had generally received favorable judicial outcomes, making this ruling particularly notable.
Meanwhile, the European Union and several other countries have said they are reviewing both the Court’s decision and the newly announced U.S. tariffs. The situation has injected fresh uncertainty into the global trading system, raising concerns about renewed protectionist tensions.
