Trump Calls Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir an “Extremely Respected” Figure, Reiterates Claim of Preventing India–Pakistan War

U.S. President Donald Trump has described Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, as an “extremely respected” individual. At the same time, Trump once again claimed that he played a key role in preventing a potential war—possibly even a nuclear conflict—between Pakistan and India.

According to a report by Geo News, Trump made the remarks on Monday (December 22) in Florida while responding to questions at an event attended by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of the Navy John Phelan. “We stopped a possible nuclear war between Pakistan and India,” Trump said.

Trump further claimed that Field Marshal Asim Munir and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had personally credited him for defusing the crisis. According to Trump, his intervention helped avert a war that could have cost the lives of nearly ten million people.

He stated that during the period of heightened tensions, eight aircraft were shot down and the situation was rapidly escalating toward a much larger conflict. “The war was about to become far more dangerous,” Trump said, adding that he has so far helped stop a total of eight wars globally.

During the same press conference in Florida, Trump also unveiled plans for a new generation of U.S. naval warships under the proposed “Trump Class,” which he described as a major step toward strengthening and expanding the capabilities of the U.S. Navy.

Trump has repeatedly taken credit in the past for easing tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, India and Pakistan. Since gaining independence, the two countries have fought three wars and remain locked in a long-standing dispute over Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

In May this year, Pakistan and India experienced their most serious military confrontation in decades. The escalation followed a deadly attack on tourists in the Pahalgam area of Indian-administered Kashmir. New Delhi claimed the attack was carried out with Pakistan’s backing, an allegation Islamabad firmly denied.

The attack killed 26 men and is widely considered the deadliest assault on Indian civilians since the 2008 Mumbai attacks. In the aftermath, India carried out three consecutive days of what Pakistan described as provocative strikes, resulting in the deaths of several innocent civilians.

Pakistan, in response, said its armed forces launched a defensive counter-operation named “Operation Bunyanum Marsoos,” claiming it was a measured and successful response aimed at protecting national sovereignty. Although fears of a full-scale war gripped the region, the situation ultimately stopped short of an all-out conflict.
