Who Is Raja Subramani? India Appoints New Army Chief

India’s Ministry of Defence has appointed Lieutenant General N. S. Raja Subramani as the country’s next Chief of Army Staff, replacing General Anil Chauhan, whose tenure is scheduled to end on May 30. With more than 41 years of military experience, Raja Subramani is regarded as one of the most seasoned and strategically influential officers in the Indian Armed Forces.

Currently, Lieutenant General Raja Subramani is serving as the Military Adviser at India’s National Security Council Secretariat, a position he has held since September 1, 2025. Before assuming this role, he served as India’s Vice Chief of Army Staff from July 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025. Earlier, from March 2023 to June 2024, he held the prestigious post of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) in the Indian Army.

Raja Subramani began his military career in December 1985 when he was commissioned into The Garhwal Rifles, one of the Indian Army’s renowned infantry regiments. Over the decades, he has served in several sensitive and conflict-prone regions across India. His career includes command responsibilities, operational leadership, staff appointments, and instructional assignments, reflecting a broad spectrum of military expertise.

Apart from his battlefield and strategic experience, Subramani also possesses an impressive academic background. He graduated from the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Military Academy (IMA), two of India’s premier military institutions. He later earned a master’s degree from King’s College London in the United Kingdom. Additionally, he attended the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Bracknell, UK, and the National Defence College in New Delhi.

Throughout his distinguished military career, Raja Subramani has received several prestigious honours and awards for his service and leadership. These include the Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal — some of the highest military decorations awarded by India.

Security analysts believe his appointment comes at a significant time for India, as the country seeks to strengthen military preparedness and regional strategic partnerships amid evolving geopolitical tensions in South Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.
