Speculation is growing that Iran has added Russia’s advanced Mi-28 attack helicopter to its military fleet. Several media outlets report that, following a recent 12-day conflict with Israel, Tehran may be strengthening its air combat capabilities as part of a broader defense overhaul.
According to a U.S.-based defense website, a video circulating on social media appears to show a Russian-made Mi-28NE attack helicopter flying over Tehran. Although the footage has not yet been independently verified, defense analysts are treating it as potentially significant.
Further fueling the speculation, images published online last week allegedly show a Mi-28 helicopter stationed inside a hangar operated by Pars Aerospace Services near Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran. Analysts believe this could indicate either delivery or evaluation of the aircraft by Iranian forces.
On January 3, Iranian journalist Mohammad Taheri shared a photo on social media platform X showing a Mi-28 helicopter painted in desert camouflage, a scheme consistent with Middle Eastern operational environments.
The Mi-28, developed by Russia, is a heavily armed attack helicopter designed for frontline combat missions. It is equipped with a 30-millimeter automatic cannon, anti-tank guided missiles, and rocket pods. Its advanced radar and infrared targeting systems allow it to detect and engage targets with high precision, even at night or in complex battlefield conditions.
Adding to the intrigue, flight-tracking data indicates that at least five Il-76 Russian cargo aircraft traveled between Russia and Iran in January. While the cargo carried by these flights has not been disclosed, analysts suggest they may have been linked to military equipment transfers.
Although there has been no official confirmation from either Tehran or Moscow, the reported presence of the Mi-28 in Iran has raised new questions about deepening military cooperation between the two countries and its potential impact on regional security dynamics in the Middle East.
