Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned that if the United States launches an attack on Iranian territory, Iran will retaliate by striking US military bases located across the Middle East. However, he made it clear that Iran would not target the US mainland.
Araghchi made the remarks in an interview with Al Jazeera on Saturday (February 7). Portions of the interview were later shared on his official Telegram channel. He stated, “If the United States attacks us, we will not strike the American mainland. But we will target their bases in this region.”
At the same time, the Iranian foreign minister expressed cautious optimism about ongoing diplomatic efforts between Tehran and Washington. Referring to recent talks held in Oman, Araghchi said the discussions were positive and could pave the way for a constructive framework on Iran’s nuclear issue if the current momentum continues.
Speaking to journalists, Araghchi noted, “If we can continue on this positive path, then it is possible to reach a favorable framework regarding nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States.” His comments suggested that despite rising tensions, diplomatic channels remain open.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump also described the talks with Iran as encouraging. Following indirect negotiations between the two sides in Oman, Trump said on Friday that Washington had held “very good discussions” with Iran, which could help prevent further escalation.
While traveling aboard Air Force One en route to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump told reporters, “We’ve had very good talks on Iran. It seems Iran wants to make a deal. We’re going to meet again early next week.”
Earlier, Trump reiterated his administration’s hardline stance, recalling what he described as the US “Midnight Hammer” operation against Iran last year. “I don’t think they want to face something like that again,” he said, underscoring continued pressure alongside diplomacy.
