Death Toll in Iran Protests Feared to Exceed 12,000; International Alarm Grows

The death toll from the Iranian security forces’ brutal crackdown on nationwide anti-government protests, now in their third week, is feared to be far higher than initial estimates. Based on emerging internal sources and verified video evidence, international news agency CBS News reports that the number of fatalities may range from 12,000 to a staggering 20,000.

This alarming figure emerged after phone lines were partially restored on Tuesday, following a near-total, five-day nationwide internet and communication blackout. While British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper told Parliament that the UK’s assessment indicated at least 2,000 deaths, she acknowledged the “strong likelihood” that the true number was significantly higher.

A shocking video from a morgue on the outskirts of Tehran, verified by CBS News, underscores the scale of the violence. The 16-minute clip shows between 366 and 400 bodies piled up, with forensic workers documenting gunshot wounds, shotgun injuries, and severe trauma. The scene inside the morgue, littered with bloodied clothes and crowded with grieving families, points to a catastrophic loss of life.

The Iranian government has not released any official or regular casualty figures. However, Reuters cited an anonymous Iranian official who claimed the death toll was around 2,000, blaming the violence on foreign-backed “terrorists” and paid agitators.

In stark contrast, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of the Norway-based Iran Human Rights organization, painted a grim picture, stating the information they are receiving about the repression is “beyond imagination.” He accused security forces of raiding private hospitals in Tehran to seize the identities of the wounded and threatened staff. He described the situation as the entire nation being trapped in a vast “solitary prison cell” where torture and killings are rampant.

The international response has intensified. U.S. President Donald Trump voiced strong support for the protesters, declaring “help is coming,” and called on Iranian “patriots” to continue their movement and seize government institutions. Pentagon sources indicate the Trump administration is considering a range of military and intelligence options beyond conventional airstrikes.

In an interview with CBS News, exiled Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi argued that the Iranian people now demand tangible action, not just verbal support. He claimed over 80% of Iranians want an end to the current regime and asserted that swift international intervention would save lives and accelerate its collapse.

The crisis has ignited a fierce debate on the application of the international community’s “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P) doctrine. The future of Iran now hangs in a precarious balance, heavily dependent on whether global powers will act to protect civilians from further state-sponsored violence.
