January 1, 2025 – Matthew Muller, the notorious “Gone Girl” kidnapper, has confessed to a series of previously unreported crimes, including home invasions and attempted sexual assaults dating back to 2009. These revelations shed new light on the disturbing breadth of Muller’s violent behavior, which extends far beyond his infamous 2015 kidnapping case.
A Pattern of Predation
In newly uncovered cases, prosecutors allege that Muller broke into homes in Palo Alto, California, targeting women in the sanctity of their residences. In one chilling incident, Muller restrained a woman, forced her to ingest a mixture of drugs, and attempted to sexually assault her. Remarkably, the victim persuaded him to stop, and he reportedly left the home with the ominous suggestion that she get a dog for protection.
The crimes, initially unsolved, were reopened following advancements in forensic technology and renewed investigation. DNA evidence and other links have now tied Muller to these cases, marking a turning point in justice for the victims.
Prosecutors’ Determination
Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen expressed the gravity of the situation, stating, “Matthew Muller’s calculated and predatory actions show a level of depravity that we rarely encounter. His crimes devastated lives, and it’s our responsibility to ensure he is fully held accountable.”
The new charges highlight a years-long crime spree that investigators believe could include other unsolved cases. “We are urging anyone who might have been a victim to come forward,” Rosen added.
A Notorious Criminal History
Muller’s criminal notoriety began with the 2015 kidnapping of Denise Huskins, an event that captivated national attention due to its eerie resemblance to the plot of the film and novel Gone Girl. Huskins was abducted from her Vallejo, California, home and held captive for 48 hours before being released. Initially dismissed as a hoax by the Vallejo Police Department, Huskins’ account was vindicated by compelling evidence, leading to Muller’s arrest and eventual conviction.
Muller, a former Harvard-educated attorney, was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison in 2017 for the kidnapping. However, the newly unveiled charges indicate that his history of predatory behavior began long before.
A Netflix Documentary and Public Reckoning
The Huskins case and the subsequent legal and public fallout were chronicled in the 2024 Netflix documentary American Nightmare. The documentary revealed how the Vallejo Police Department’s mishandling of the case compounded the victims’ trauma, leading to a $3.2 million settlement in 2018. Huskins and her husband, Aaron Quinn, have since rebuilt their lives, advocating for justice and supporting survivors of violent crimes.
New Developments and Upcoming Court Proceedings
Muller is scheduled to enter a plea for the 2009 home invasion charges on January 17, 2025. Prosecutors are working to ensure that these new charges result in an extension of Muller’s already lengthy sentence.
“These additional crimes represent a pattern of terror and trauma inflicted on his victims,” Rosen stated. “Our office will not rest until every crime he committed is addressed in the court of law.”
A Broader Call for Justice
The latest revelations have reignited discussions about the justice system’s ability to identify and stop serial offenders before their crimes escalate. Advocates for survivors are pushing for reforms to improve the handling of cold cases and ensure that victims receive the support they need.
Muller’s crimes, detailed in court documents and victim testimonies, are a sobering reminder of the persistence of violent predators and the importance of holding them accountable.
