Severe Floods in Thailand Claim 162 Lives, Millions Affected

Thailand is reeling under devastating floods caused by heavy rainfall over the past week, which have claimed at least 162 lives, according to government officials. The unprecedented floods have left millions of people facing severe losses, damaging homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods across the country.

On Saturday, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul directed emergency relief and rehabilitation efforts in the hardest-hit areas. Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed at a press briefing that the fatalities have been reported in eight provinces, with Songkhla province recording the highest number of deaths at 126.

The scale of destruction and loss of life has drawn widespread criticism of the government’s flood management efforts. Speaking to reporters, Prime Minister Anutin acknowledged the gaps in the government’s response and apologized to residents in flood-affected areas, stating, “The government has failed to provide adequate services and protection to citizens impacted by the floods.”

He added that compensation for affected individuals would begin next week. In addition, measures such as temporary suspension of loans, low-interest emergency loans for business and home repairs, and other forms of support would be provided to assist those impacted.

Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported that floodwaters began receding across all provinces on Saturday morning. Video footage shows residents returning to their homes, which had been submerged for days, to witness the extent of the damage. Furniture, household appliances, and personal belongings were strewn across flooded floors.

The floods, which began late last week, have caused widespread disruption. Thousands of people were stranded, many roads became impassable, and low-lying buildings and vehicles were submerged. In Hat Yai, the largest city of Songkhla province, the death toll has risen sharply. Rescue teams are now able to access areas previously unreachable due to high water levels and have recovered numerous bodies.

Spokesperson Siripong also mentioned that King Maha Vajiralongkorn will donate 100 million baht (approximately 3.11 million USD) to Hat Yai Hospital to assist with relief operations. Royal support will also be provided for funeral arrangements for flood victims.

Authorities are intensifying rescue and rehabilitation operations to provide safe shelter, emergency food, and other essential services to affected populations. Local governments and emergency teams continue to work around the clock to stabilize the situation and restore normalcy in flood-hit areas.
