Israel Is Weaponizing Hunger in Gaza, Says Amnesty International

The humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza is no longer limited to relentless military strikes. According to a new report by Amnesty International, Israel is now deliberately using “hunger” as a weapon of war against Palestinians in Gaza, pushing the enclave deeper into a man-made famine.

In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, July 3, the international human rights organization accused Israel of systematically obstructing the delivery of food, water, and medical supplies—acts that, under international law, constitute a form of genocide. The report, first cited by the British news agency Anadolu, intensifies the global scrutiny over Israel’s tactics in its ongoing military campaign.

“Destroying the Basics of Life Is a Method of Genocide”

Agnes Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, stated:

“Israel knows that destroying access to food, water, and medicine renders life unsustainable. This is not just physical annihilation—it is a calculated method of erasing existence. And that is genocide.”

Callamard emphasized that Israel’s actions go beyond traditional warfare, turning starvation and disease into tools of domination. Even those seeking food aid have been targeted—shot or bombed en route to aid centers.

Aid Centers Have Become Death Traps

According to the report, aid centers approved by the Israeli military, such as those under the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), have effectively turned into death zones. Desperate civilians queuing for food or water have been killed in Israeli attacks near these centers.

Hundreds of aid trucks wait daily at Gaza’s borders, yet most are denied entry due to Israeli restrictions. This has pushed the territory into a dire shortage of essentials, with hunger and disease escalating rapidly.

Children Are Dying Silently

Since the war began in October 2023, at least 66 children have died from malnutrition, according to Amnesty International. The true number is likely higher when including deaths from dehydration, infections, and treatable illnesses exacerbated by the blockade.

One heart-wrenching case mentioned is that of Jinan Iskafi, a four-month-old infant who died from severe malnutrition and dehydration after her mother could no longer access baby formula. In hospitals across Khan Younis and Gaza, nearly 15% of children show signs of acute malnutrition.

Doctors interviewed in the report described their despair, revealing that many of them are displaced, physically exhausted, and working without adequate medical supplies. Children who receive initial treatment often relapse due to unhygienic conditions and lack of follow-up care.

A Damning Silence from World Leaders

Amnesty International didn’t only hold Israel accountable—it harshly criticized the international community for its inaction and complicity. The organization stated:

“World leaders are not merely failing—they are allowing Israel’s destruction to continue unchecked, as silent spectators.”

The group demanded:

  • An immediate halt to all forms of military aid to Israel
  • Sanctions against Israeli officials involved in human rights abuses
  • A global ban on arms trade and investment with Israel

A Crisis That Demands More Than Sympathy

Amnesty’s report has sharpened the global discourse around Israel’s siege of Gaza, painting a stark picture of a government weaponizing basic human needs to crush an entire population. This is no longer just a humanitarian emergency—it is a legal and moral crisis that demands swift international intervention.

The international community must go beyond statements of concern. As hunger, thirst, and medicine deprivation are used as tools of collective punishment, history will judge those who remained silent.

“You saw it. You knew it. Yet you did nothing. Why?” — That question may haunt the conscience of nations in years to come.
